November 06, 2006

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The November/December issue of Detroit Home magazine, hitting newsstands Nov. 14, reveals the highly anticipated results of the 2006 Detroit Home Design Awards competition. The issue features all 64 winning Michigan companies and announces metro Detroit's 2006 rising star in design.

Top 2006 Detroit Home Design Award-winners include McIntosh Poris & Associates of Birmingham, DesRosiers Architects of Bloomfield Hills, Jeffrey King Interiors of Birmingham, and Lubin Schulz & Skocelas of Bloomfield Hills. Gala guests gave a standing ovation in honor of the late Doug McIntosh, a devoted and creative supporter of Detroit design who died unexpectedly ealier this year.

The special Design Awards issue features two winning home makeovers: a restoration and expansion of a 1920s-era residence in Birmingham, and a sophisticated updated of a 1980s luxury residence.

The November/December issue of Detroit Home also features advice from the experts on how to throw the perfect holiday gathering, stock a party-ready pantry, and give a well-considered hostess gift. Look for the holiday gift guide, select party music, and winter floral options.

In the gift guide, Detroit Home scouts reveal innovative gifts to please domestic gods and goddesses alike. Original and handcrafted products top the list of this year's inspired gifts. Detroit Home recommends a peppermill for the kitchen, original tiles for the conservatory, and monogrammed bathrobes for the bathroom.

Detroit Home went to the experts to discover the tricks to planning a stress-free holiday party. Frequent entertainers tell Detroit Home that the key to success is preparation, letting go of perfectionist tendencies, dressing for comfort, and serving great food.

Whether a distracted hostess forgets the key ingredient to her signature dish, or is surprised by unexpected guests, a well-stocked pantry can save the celebration. A few of Detroit Home's suggested can't-live-without items for the cupboard include tea lights, high-quality chocolate, canned crab, and mixed nuts.

A thoughtful hostess gift can be the key to future invitations. Detroit Home assistant style editor Taryn Bickley tells us where to shop for universal gifts that are sure to please every host or hostess. Gifts can range from items to be enjoyed at the party or stashed away to savor later, but should always be reflective of a guest's appreciation for the invitation.

Detroit Home has the flawless finishing touches for creating holiday ambiance. Tips for designing impressive mantels include using crystal and mirrors, and using unexpected floral options -- such as orchids and calla lilies -- to break out of the poinsettia rut. The holiday issue of Detroit Home also looks at tree-trimming trends over the years, including monochromatic color schemes, silver-toned trees, velvet accents, and nostalgic ornaments.
